Meglena Kuneva, the Bulgarian EU Commissioner, is this year's European of the Year. She is a Liberal on ELDR's list of their 9 Commissioners. She is the first woman European of the Year in the 8 years of the annual awards and was awarded the honour largely for work on consumer policy. Other awards were as follows -
EU Official of the Year & Most Valued European:
Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank.
National Politician of the Year:
Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France.
Commissioner of the Year:
Stavros Dimas, European commissioner for environment.
MEP of the Year:
Claude Turmes, Luxembourgeois Green politician.
Inspiration of the Year:
Daniel Morar, head of Romania's anti-corruption agency.
