Commenting on David Cameron's proposals following the abandonment of his plans for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Edward Davey said: "Cameron's confused middle way will satisfy no one. It combines pointless gimmicks with dangerous proposals which would mire Britain in an endless round of negotiations. After almost a decade of institutional wrangling it is madness to re-open long and drawn out discussions which would inevitably result in a bust-up with Europe. Cameron's statement will be greeted with dismay in Paris and Berlin, as well as in the White House.
"At a time when Europe needs to act on the economy, climate change and tackling serious organised crime, the Tories would leave Britain impotent and irrelevant, bogged down in needless arguments.
"Cameron has already done enough to alienate Britain's allies across Europe by leading his party into the lunatic wilderness - now he wants to take Britain there too. Now is hardly the time to pick yet more battles with his former centre-right partners.
"It is an alarming indication of just how far Cameron remains hostage to the Eurosceptic wing of his party that he has felt unable to fully rule out a referendum."
