Federal Union's annual conference will look at two subjects: 1) The future of democratic politics in Europe after the Lisbon treaty; 2) How Lisbon will affect the EU's role in the world. Non-members are welcome to the conference on Saturday 6 March 2010 at 11am. Room S421, St Clements Building, LSE, Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE (nearest tubes Temple, Holborn). 11 am After Lisbon: the European Union and democratic politics
Guest speaker: Richard Corbett (former MEP, now member of the cabinet of President Herman Van Rompuy)
How does the new treaty develop democratic politics within the EU institutions? What impact will it have on democratic politics within the member states? What conclusions can be drawn from the way in which it was drafted and ratified?
1 pm lunch
2 pm AGM session to receive the annual report and accounts and election of a new committee
2.30 pm After Lisbon: the European Union and its role in the world
Guest speakers: Professor Richard Whitman (University of Bath), Brendan Donnelly (Director, Federal Trust)
What ambitions has the EU has set itself for its external policies? What mechanisms does the Lisbon treaty provide for implementing those policies? What conclusions can be drawn on whether the ambitions and/or the mechanisms will prove adequate?

Participation at the AGM and conference is free, but we ask for a donation of £20 (waged) or £10 (student/unwaged) towards the costs of the catering and room hire. Please make a donation if you can.
Elections
There are the following places on the committee to be filled at the AGM: Chair, three Deputy Chairs, Treasurer, Secretary, and 4 other places on the committee. Nominations may be accepted up until the meeting itself, so you do not have to submit a nomination in advance, but it would help the organisation of the meeting if you are able to do so.
