British requests welcome but there must be fundamental Treaty change - EU Lib Dems

February 5, 2016 2:47 PM

"The changes requested by David Cameron will require treaty change in order to be implemented. But it is also clear that the rest of Europe needs fundamental changes to be able to tackle the multiple crises it faces," says the Leader of the European Liberal Democrats (ALDE), Guy Verhofstadt MEP.

"The European Parliament is open to the British proposals, but reform must be genuine and EU wide. We need to strengthen the governance of the euro zone, further improve democratic controls, ensure the Union has a real energy and an effective foreign policy."

The ALDE Group has adopted a position paper on the draft proposals by the President of the European Council, which you can see here.
