LDEG congratulates our Ukrainian friends on their Independence Day.

It was 22 Years ago, on 24 August 1991, that the independence of Ukraine from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was proclaimed and approved by 92.3% of the Ukrainian electorate in a referendum held on 1 December in all parts of the country. Turnout was 84.2% of the electorate.

Canada and Russia were the first countries to recognise the independence of Ukraine on 2 December 1991. The UK followed on 31 December 1991.

President Leonid Kravchuk was the first democratically elected president.

The Liberal Democrats are proud to stand with Ukraine. As LibDem MP, Layla Moran, stated we will in particular stand with our ALDE sister parties, Holos, led by Kira Rudik, and Servants of the People Party, led by President Zelensky.
