Sal Brinton - Vice President of ALDE
Sal Brinton is a member of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament, and has been actively involved in politics and public service for several decades. She joined the Liberal Party in the 1970s, campaigning for the UK's rĂ´le in the (then) European Communities. She was made a life peer in 2010, taking the title Baroness Brinton of Kenardington in the County of Kent.
Baroness Brinton has held various leadership roles within the Liberal Democrats, including election as the party's President from 2015 to 2019. In 2010 she set up the Party's Leadership Programme for the four under-represented groups in politics (Women, LGBTQ+, Ethnic Minorities and Disabled People), developing skills for candidates for various types of elected office.
In the House of Lords, she has been a vocal advocate for disability rights, Europe, education, and healthcare, often speaking from personal experience as a disabled person. Her contributions to the party and her efforts in these areas have been widely recognized.
In addition to her work within the UK, Baroness Brinton has also been involved in the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) party, which is a transnational political group representing liberal and centrist parties across Europe. ALDE sits within the Renew Group of the European Parliament.
She is currently serving her second term as an elected Vice President of ALDE. Her involvement with ALDE has focused on promoting liberal values, and advocating progressive policies at the European level. She chaired ALDE's recent review of its Charter of Values, working with 76 member parties. Through her work with ALDE, Baroness Brinton has contributed to the Liberal Democrat's efforts to support human rights, democratic governance, and economic development within the European Union.
